Six free games for second graders, weighted toward the two things that matter most this year: addition facts becoming automatic, and reading becoming fluent enough to stop being work.
2nd Grade Math Games
- Addition Game – Solve the problem mentally, click the answer. Addition within 20 is the skill second grade is built on, and the only route to it is repetition. Comes with a printable addition worksheet.
- Times Tables – Pick a table and practice. Most second graders start with the 2s, 5s, and 10s, which are counting patterns they half-know already. Printable worksheet included.
- The Mystery Number – Higher-and-lower guessing. Good for number sense and for teaching children to narrow a range instead of guessing at random.
Reading and Spelling Games
- Word Scramble – Unscramble letters to make a word. It forces children to hold letters in working memory and test combinations, which is harder and more useful than it looks.
- Alphabetical Order – ABC ordering, the skill behind dictionaries and indexes.
- Family Vocabulary – Audio-led vocabulary practice.
